To access cells in electrophysiology often requires the use of glass microelectrodes or patch pipettes. These are produced from glass filaments using a micropipette puller: pulling the glass ends with controlled force while heating the middle of the capillary leads to sharp tips with small openings. By changing the parameters (force, heat) the characteristics of the electrode, i.e. size and impedance, can be adapted according to the experiment.
